I grew up in American Falls, where the year runs on sugar beets and potatoes. That was my family's work and I've got nothing but respect for it. I just knew it wasn't mine.
I'd been cutting hair since I was a kid, mostly friends in the kitchen and anybody who'd hold still. Went to barber school in Boise and learned the trade the right way. What surprised me was how little of it is about hair. It's about the guy who sits down worn out, and an hour later he stands up looking like himself again and feeling good. That's the part I stayed for.
